On Good Friday we enter the shadows not to escape the world but to recognize the places where suffering is real, the burdens are heavy and hope can be hard to find. This is a service of Tenebrae, an ancient word meaning “shadows”. As Scripture is read and candles are extinguished, the Sanctuary will darken to reflect the last hours of Jesus’ life. The theme for this service, “In the Company of Shadows” is about solidarity and the gift of sacred presence. We watch and wait and witness the quiet strength of Christ’s solidarity.
